Trauma

Youth who have experienced significant substance abuse frequently experience significant trauma. For many youth, this trauma is experienced as compromised values and severe losses of self and family. For others, this abuse is experienced as brutal episodes of sexual and physical abuse while under the influence. for others, it is the tragedy of ritualistic abuse and gang affiliations. All of this abuse results in traumatic suffering and true loss.

All of this abuse results in traumatic suffering. And true reclamation of self requires resolving this pain and loss. Shoreline provides services for discovering and recovering from the traumas which result from substance abuse and mistreatment. But youth are not the only victims of trauma from their abuse of chemicals. Any parent of a chemically dependent child knows the agony and loss of a countless number of sleepless nights and forgotten dreams.

The family can only truly recover as they reconcile the trauma they have experienced together. Youth and their families work together under direct supervision of clinical staff to resolve these losses using principles developed through guided written therapy and embodied in a proven program of trauma resolution.

Behavior Management

Embodied within Shoreline's system is a specialized program for dealing with youth who require special treatment for special behavioral disorders. Youth with chemical dependency frequently exhibit very challenging behaviors. These behaviors can be terribly frightening within the family setting. Often these behaviors have resulted in involvement with the criminal justice system. Effective substance abuse treatment requires that these behaviors be treated and managed. Our programs treat these behaviors by holding each youth accountable for meeting their own needs and for accepting responsibility for their own behaviors. This system utilizes a skill based curriculum for teaching appropriate social skills to the youth. Youth are then required to use these more appropriate skills in order to move through the various program levels. As youth begin to see their success with these new skills, their self-esteem improves and they move into areas of greater responsibility and privilege.
